SafeSol Corrosion Information
Corrosion - Introduction
SafeSol is a 50% hydrogen peroxide solution catalysed using colloidal silver and stabilised using a number of other trace additives. The pH of the chemical is around 2.3
SafeSol is used at a variety of concentrations. The neat chemical will be dosed using conventional dosing equipment and it is important that tanks which contain the chemical and pumping systems and devices which are used to dose the chemical are fabricated in appropriate materials.
SafeSol is used as a surface disinfectant and it is important that the solution strengths used (generally 1% to 5%) will not affect any materials with which the solution will come into contact.
Finally SafeSol is used as a biocide for water treatment. Solution strengths are unlikely to exceed 200 ppm for this application and it is important to be aware of the effect, which dilute SafeSol might have on water system materials.
SafeSol is an extremely strong oxidising agent. It is also, in its neat form, acidic. It decomposes readily in the presence of soluble iron and readily reacts with reactive organic materials. The following tables are based on the best corrosion data we have available at present. Our experience indicates that neat solution will not cause any problems with any of the conventional dosing pumps or dosing tanks. The strengths found in water systems should pose no threat to the integrity of the system although corrosion products in steel systems could lead to the decomposition of the SafeSol solution. The reaction of SafeSol with organics means that it will remove biofilm and microbiological slimes from pipe work internals.
SafeSol and its Effect on Metals
Material of Construction Corrosion Rate Comments on Corrosion Notes
  1. Corrosion rates are given as thousands of an inch per annum (mpy)
  2.  In all cases apart from those mentioned the corrosion rates apply at temperatures up to 100 0C

Recommendations

  1. The chemical will not present a problem in water systems (apart from the situation regarding soluble iron).
  2. The product should not be sprayed on to the metals indicated in the table viz copper, copper alloys, aluminium, zinc or galvanised steel or Ni /Mo alloy at concentrations greater than 1%.
  3. Careful consideration needs to be given to storing the neat chemical in a metal container. SafeSol Limited would recommend that the chemical should not be stored in metal containers and that an appropriate plastic is used.
