Is the heating on once the workforce leaves in the evening, on the weekend when heating isn’t required, or when it’s warm outside? Performing a simple audit to ensure the boiler is only running when it needs to can make an enormous difference to running costs.
Find the lowest comfortable and safe temperature for your staff and customers – every degree you turn your thermostat down can save around 10% on your energy bills.
Adding a heating system additive can vastly reduce energy bills – Delta-T has been proven to save users up to 25% on heating costs by reducing the surface tension of water (allowing it to spread out optimally across conducting surfaces). This improves thermal conductance, meaning water heats up faster and stays hotter for longer.
Ensure your boiler has an optimised flow temperature – as a rule of thumb (depending on your type of boiler) a flow temperature of 60 degrees or slightly lower if your premises are well insulated can help you to save money on your energy bills whilst ensuring the building heats up quickly and efficiently. (nb: Before making any changes to your flow temperature setting, it’s important to check your user manual and ensure all safety requirements are met)
Identifying ways to keep heat in the building can negate the need to use the heating so often. Investing in draught excluders and blocking gaps that let air through (even the smaller ones, like keyholes, letterboxes, cracks in the floorboards or unused chimneys!) can stop warm air from escaping. That said, it’s important to make sure that you still have some fresh air coming into your building, as this will help you avoid problems with mould.
Involve your staff in energy-saving efforts by asking their opinion on how systems may be run more efficiently or how heating usage could be reduced. You may want to consider educating them in energy-efficient practices or consider introducing incentives to improve the success of energy-saving initiatives.
