Huwa-San: The Multi Purpose Disinfectant

People often ask me what I do, the reply that I usually give is that I sell Huwa-San disinfectant for legionella control, as it is a safer and better alternative to chlorine. However, this is very much an over simplification.

Huwa-San: A Broad Spectrum Biocide

Huwa-San silver stabilised hydrogen peroxide is a great weapon to control legionella bacteria in water systems, but it is so much more. It is also an extremely effective biocide for surface and air disinfection. Huwa-San, manufactured by Roam Technology, is a broad spectrum biocide which has shown to be highly efficient bactericide, virucide, fungicide, algaecide and sporicide. It is odourless, colourless and tasteless and breaks down into oxygen and water. It is completely chlorine and alcohol free.

Huwa-San: The Water Disinfectant

Huwa-San can be used to shock dose water systems; either during routine disinfection, or when microbiological issues have been identified in the water system. In both of these cases, Huwa-San is a much more effective disinfectant than chlorine, as it will remove biofilm in the water system and its break down products are oxygen and water. This makes it much more environmentally friendly than chlorine, which can form over 600 by-products, many of which are carcinogens.

Routine Disinfection: In the case where tank fed, water systems are routinely disinfected and there are no legionella control issues then Huwa-San dosage can be applied at 100ppm peroxide with a contact time of 24 hours. This will maintain system cleanliness.

Disinfection where Legionella or Pseudomonas Bacteria has been identified: When a microbiological issue has been identified with the system, a higher dose rate of Huwa-San would be advised. In this case, the Huwa-San dosage would be applied at 1000ppm peroxide with a contact time of 1 hour. This will remove biofilm containing both Legionella and Pseudomonas.

Man fogging gym

During the past 18 months of the Covid-19 pandemic, Huwa-San has been used to disinfect spaces to ensure cleanliness. It has been used to prevent Covid-19 spreading in areas of high use; for example, staff food canteens where workers could not work from home. Regular weekly fogging kept virus levels to a minimum and helped to prevent staff members getting sick.

Fogging has also been used to prevent Covid-19 spreading where a positive case of Covid has been identified. It has been used many times in offices, gyms and sports clubs where team members have tested positive. The fogging of these spaces with Huwa-San has killed any viruses present and has allowed other staff members to return safely to work.

Norovirus

In addition to Covid-19; Huwa-San will control other bacteria, viruses and mould. It has been used successfully to fog a hotel in Gourock, Scotland, where a number of the visitors and staff had the sickness bug Norovirus.

41 cases of Norovirus were detected in the hotel. After limiting the movement of infected people, increasing cleaning in public areas, and fogging the rooms with Huwa-San, the outbreak was swiftly brought under control. After fogging with Huwa-San, samples were taken by the environmental health team and were found to be negative of Norovirus.

How Norovirus Spreads & Symptoms

Commonly known as the winter vomiting bug, Norovirus is the most common cause of viral gastroenteritis in the UK. It is a virus that can be transmitted by faecal contamination of air and water, person to person contact, or aerosolization of the virus and subsequent contamination of surfaces. It is extremely contagious and there is no cure. The disease usually occurs where there are a large number of people living in close proximity to each other in for example in Nursing Homes, Hotels and Ships.

Norovirus can be extremely unpleasant with symptoms of diarrhoea, vomiting and stomach cramps. It can also cause the patient to become weak and fatigued. The virus is self-limiting and most people recover from the virus within a few days however the elderly and the immune – suppressed can become more seriously ill. It is important that patients remain hydrated while they are suffering.

Whilst there is no cure for the Norovirus it can be prevented and killed by good hygiene practices. Huwa-San has been proven to kill Norovirus. In Scientific tests carried out by Caledonian University in Scotland this market leading silver stabilised hydrogen peroxide was proven to kill calicivirus (surrogate human norovirus) at low concentrations and short contact times.

Huwa-San: The AFNOR test

There is also independent, scientific proof that Huwa-San is effective against viruses, bacteria and mould. Roam Technology have put Huwa-San through the AFNOR NF T72 281 test for fogging. A 12.5% concentration of Huwa-San has passed the AFNOR test. This is the test that must be passed for fogging in Health premises.

This test ensures that treatment achieves the following log reduction
Bacteria > 5
Yeast. > 4
Spores > 3
Mycobacterium > 4
Viruses > 4
Bacteriophage > 4
